To Make A Home

  1. To Make A Home

“As we rehearsed a bit, I realized I needed to figure out a melody/alternate harmony to the main melody he was singing, because singing in unison wasn’t working at all.

What made the recording process a bit tricky was that, since it was being recorded live, we had to cut the whole song at once. Unlike some other songs, there was no option to do different sections separately, and if there was a mistake or imperfection, we couldn’t fix it in post-production. Because the song was so new, I was not playing the same piano parts every single time, so there could be no punch-in of any kind. We were singing together, and we were in the same room, which meant that the piano was being picked up by both of our microphones, and vice versa. We also didn’t have any click, because I wanted the song to breathe and flow naturally. To top it all off, we had never sung this song together prior to this moment – well, I had just written it, and was kind of still writing it, as we hit Record.[...]”

To Make A Home

To Make A Home

I woke up crying for my love
I called for you and you appeared
You held me close so tenderly
You smiled and kissed away my tears

I feel like time is running out
Please tell me how to make it through
I want to try and keep you safe
I want to share this life with you

I want to make a home with you
I need to know you want it too
The pain of distance has revealed:
I need you here
And I’ll be healed
I want to build a home with you

You think I’m strong, you think I’m good
But you should know I’m wounded too
Don’t look too close: you’ll see my scars
So please be gentle, if you do

I wake up tired
I dream awake
All colors fade
Time steals our youth;
I was too scared to say these words
But I can finally speak the truth:

I want to make a home with you
I need to know you want it too
The pain of distance has revealed:
I need you here
And I’ll be healed
I want to build a home with you
